 Course: CHEM 3503 Physical Chemistry I

Course Description: This course covers the mathematical approaches to the physical properties of chemical systems, including gas laws, thermochemistry, equilibria, liquids and solutions, solids and reaction rates.

Prerequisites: CHEM 2104, CHEM 3312, MATH 2313, (PHY 2114 or concurrent enrollment in PHY 2114)

Course Objectives: Students, upon completion of this course will understand and utilize the Calculus based analysis of the areas of physical chemistry that include: Ideal and real gases, pure liquids, solutions and solids, thermodynamics each of these systems, and kinetics. Methods utilized will be analytical and numerical including advanced computer methods.

Other Resources: Other references will be given in class. Students must have access to a computer with plotting and mathematical software and a calculator. Those without such access have computers available to them in the Chemistry Student Computer Laboratory H 318. This couse will utlize the mathematical software package MathCad for distributionof lecture notes and examples and for the completion of selected homework and exam assignments. This software is available for use in HOH 318 and an academic version is available for purchase. PTC MathCad Prime

Evaluation: Final grades will be based on the results of 5 regular classroom exams and a final examinationThere will be no make-up exams once exams have been graded and returned. In the event of an emergency contact the instructor as to the best and most fair course of action for your individual circumstances. If you know in advance that you will miss an exam, arrangements can be made to take the exam early.

Audit: Students desiring to audit this course will be assessed a satisfactory grade by maintaining a letter grade of “C” or better.

Attendance:  Attendance to all classes is required.

Exam Philosophy: Exams are written with a specific intent. Please read Exam Philosphy and Strategy for this and appropriate strategies for completing the exams.

Web Exam Execution: A part of the exams is a web portion that is released no less than two days prior. Prior to the first exam, you will be required to submit the Web Exam Agreement for requirements and expectations in executing this part of the exam.

Submitted Work: All work submitted for a grade must adhere to standards commensurate with work at the Universitry level. See the Homework Guide for specific information.

Course Dissemination: This course will use "Teams" from the MIcrosoft Suite to meet at the scheduled class time Monday through Wednesday. On Thursday, exams will be posted in D2L at class time with a 2 hour time limit.

COVID-19 Positive test or Symptoms Protocol

COVID Reporting: 

Faculty, staff and students are responsible for reporting a positive case diagnosis by submitting the COVID-19 Self-Reporting form.

Masking Recommendations:  Under the current COVID conditions of “Low Community Risk Level” in the county, metropolitan area, and state, the CDC recommends that unvaccinated individuals continue to wear masks indoors.

The University of Central Oklahoma has implemented recommendations of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (the CDC) pertaining to COVID-19 on university campuses and will require students to cover their nose and mouth with an approved cloth face cover or disposable surgical-type face mask when on UCO properties. This means all students will be required to wear a face cover at all times in classrooms, hallways and public spaces. Reasonable accommodations may be available for students with diagnosed medical conditions, and must be coordinated through the UCO office of Disability Support Services. UCO will provide every student a UCO-branded cloth cover at the beginning of the semester and a limited supply of disposable masks will be available in each classroom building for those occasions when students or visitors forget their personal cloth face cover. Students who refuse to wear a cloth face cover or repeatedly forget their face cover will be subject to disciplinary action under the UCO Student Handbook and to the consequences associated with any loss of instruction. Remember slowing the spread of the virus is a community effort and will take everyone’s cooperation and support.
