CHEM 1014 and 1014L Introductory Chemistry and Lab

Course Description: This is a lecture and laboratory survey course covering selected topics in general, inorganic, organic and biochemistry. It is designed for non-science majors with applications for the allied health areas. The course consists of three hours lecture and three hours laboratory per week. Concurrent enrollment in CHEM 1014L is required. This course does not apply towards credit for chemistry majors or minors. Prerequisite(s): one college level math course.

 Instructor: Dr. Mike Jezercak

Office: H320C  E-mail:   drjez@uco.drjez.com

Office Hours: Available for e-mail questions all day until 7:30 p.m. via drjez@uco.drjez.com

Course Objectives: Course content provides content in chemistry most relevant to the health science profession. Fundamentals of qualitative chemistry and structure as well as qualitative applications are discussed and applied to biological and health systems.

Class Time: 8:00 a.m. – 10:45 a.m. M – W

Laboratory Time: 11:00 a.m. - 1:50 p.m.

Laboratories will be conducted in-person for all students. Preview videos are required prior to entering into the lab and are available on the web site. Labs will be competed on the scheduled day and lab reports will be submitted priot to leaving the lab.

Lecture Text:  Seager and Slabaugh, Chemistry for Today, 8th Ed.
This course will not utilize on-line homework via OWL

Lab Text:  Laboratory Manual available on D2L

Other Resources: The student will also need a scientific calculator for problem solving and exams.

Evaluation: Final grades will be based on the results of 4 regular chapter exams. Weighting will be as follows:

 Grade Distribution
A = 85%
B = 70 %
C = 55%
D = 40%

Exams will be disseminated for all in-class students.

Additional: To maintain a given letter grade in the course, students must complete the laboratories with a minimum of 70% (B). Except for a lecture grade of “D”. a laboratory average of less than 70% but equal to or greater than 55% will result in a reduction of a letter grade by one unit. An average in the laboratory of less than 55% will reduce the letter grade in the course by two units.

Course Schedule:

The lecture schedule, chapter coverage and homework assignment schedule are all posted at http://www.drjez.com/uco/IntroChem/IntroChem.htm

Topical Coverage

The order and content of this course will follow the lecture text. Topical content list.

COVID-19 Positive test or Symptoms Protocol

COVID Reporting:

Faculty, staff and students are responsible for reporting a positive case diagnosis by submitting the COVID-19 Self-Reporting form.

Masking Recommendations:  Under the current COVID conditions of “Low Community Risk Level” in the county, metropolitan area, and state, the CDC recommends that unvaccinated individuals continue to wear masks indoors.

--------------------------------

The University of Central Oklahoma has implemented recommendations of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (the CDC) pertaining to COVID-19 on university campuses and will require students to cover their nose and mouth with an approved cloth face cover or disposable surgical-type face mask when on UCO properties. This means all students will be required to wear a face cover at all times in classrooms, hallways and public spaces. Reasonable accommodations may be available for students with diagnosed medical conditions, and must be coordinated through the UCO office of Disability Support Services. UCO will provide every student a UCO-branded cloth cover at the beginning of the semester and a limited supply of disposable masks will be available in each classroom building for those occasions when students or visitors forget their personal cloth face cover. Students who refuse to wear a cloth face cover or repeatedly forget their face cover will be subject to disciplinary action under the UCO Student Handbook and to the consequences associated with any loss of instruction. Remember slowing the spread of the virus is a community effort and will take everyone’s cooperation and support.
